Application guide

Get it right the first time.

The same method covers all three coatings: prepare, stir, two coats, cure. What changes is the preparation each substrate needs, and that is where most failures come from.

Step one

Surface preparation

Every one of the three products asks for the same starting condition. Skip this and the film will not bond, whatever else you do correctly.

  • Clean. Free from dust, grease, oil, rust and loose particles.

  • Dry. Never apply to a wet or damp surface, and never over standing water.

  • Sound. Repair cracked or damaged concrete, and take existing rust off steel, before coating.

  • Stirred. Stir the tin thoroughly before use, and close it tightly again afterwards.

  • Dry weather. Do not apply during rain, and let the coating cure fully before any water reaches it.

Step two

The method, start to finish

One working day covers prep, both coats and a hard dry. Do not rush the intervals. They are what let the film knit together.

    Prepare & stir

    Clean and dry the surface, make repairs, then stir the tin thoroughly.

    First coat

    Brush or roller an even coat straight onto the substrate. No primer needed.

    Direct apply

  3. Step 03

    Second coat

    Once the first coat has dried, apply the second. This is the coat that closes the barrier.

    After 2–3 hrs

    Hard dry & install

    Let it cure, then fix, finish or backfill against it.

    After 5–8 hrs

What changes by substrate

Concrete

Aqua Block®

  • Repair cracks and damaged concrete before the first coat.
  • Never apply on standing water, and never during rain.
  • Allow complete curing before the surface sees water.
  • Cover the whole masonry contact area, not just the visible face.

Wood Seal®

  • Both coats go on all sides of the wood or plywood.
  • Pay special attention to faces that will contact wall, concrete, flooring or masonry.
  • Never coat wet wood; remove dust, oil, grease and loose particles first.
  • A PRIME GUARD brush gives the best result.

Steel

Rust Shield®

  • Remove existing rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or a suitable cleaning method.
  • Coat the contact area between the wall and the metal frame.
  • Do not apply on wet surfaces.
  • Install or finish the frame only once the coating has properly cured.

Do

  • Stir thoroughly before use, every time.
  • Apply an even coat with a brush or roller.
  • Apply two coats, allowing 2–3 hours between them.
  • Coat the hidden contact faces, not only what will be seen.
  • Allow 5–8 hours for a hard dry before installing or finishing.
  • Close the container tightly after use.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area, in goggles, mask and gloves.

Don’t

  • Apply to a wet, damp or dirty surface.
  • Apply over standing water or during rain.
  • Coat over unrepaired cracks, loose rust or mill scale.
  • Stop at one coat.
  • Expose the surface to water before it has cured completely.
  • Breathe in vapour or spray.
  • Leave tins where children can reach them.

Safety, storage & coverage

Personal protection

  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • Wear goggles, a dust mask and gloves.
  • Do not breathe in vapour or spray.
  • Use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Storage & shelf life

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Close the container tightly after use.
  • 24 months from the date of manufacture, in an unopened container.
  • Net content 1 Litre per tin.

Coverage

Coverage varies with the substrate, its roughness, its surface condition and how thickly the coating is applied, so a single figure would be misleading. Send us your junction details and quantities and we will help you estimate.

Frequently asked

Do I need a primer before applying PRIME GUARD?

No. All three products are direct-apply. They go straight onto clean, dry concrete, timber or steel with a brush or roller.

How long between the two coats?

Allow 2–3 hours for the first coat to dry, then apply the second. After the second coat, allow 5–8 hours for a hard dry before fixing, finishing or exposing the surface to water.

Are two coats really necessary?

Yes. The second coat is what closes the barrier. On timber it is essential, and both coats must cover every face of the frame, especially the faces that will sit against wall, concrete or flooring.

Can I apply it to a damp or wet surface?

No. The surface must be dry and free from dust, grease, oil, rust and loose particles. Never apply AQUA BLOCK over standing water, and do not apply during rain.

What about existing rust on steel?

Remove it first with a wire brush, sandpaper or another suitable method, then coat the cleaned metal, paying particular attention to the contact area between the wall and the frame.

How much area does one litre cover?

Coverage varies with the substrate, its roughness, surface condition and how thickly the coating is applied, so no single figure applies to every job. Ask us for guidance on your specific quantity.

How long does an unopened tin keep?

24 months from the date of manufacture, stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, in an unopened container.

Is WOOD SEAL breathable?

Yes. It creates a highly hydrophobic barrier that keeps moisture out while remaining breathable, so moisture already inside the timber is not sealed in.
